XPointer and TEI Pointer

Any reason not to go w/ W3C? SB points out that although backward-compatibility is not at all a requirement, of course if the TEI decides NOT to continue to use TEI extened pointers in P5, we essentially guarentee that no one ever writes more software to process them.

FV divided the type of ‘support’ we give to XPointer as relying on its syntax, its features, or explicitly name XPointer as the pointing system to use.

SB thinks ‘Syd's rule’ applies to organizations like TEI as well as individuals: unless your method is significantly and demonstrably superior to the standard, you should be using the standard.

FV has been working on extension to XPointer in Bologna w/ regexps.

Question of URIs and permanent addressing raised again. DD believes we need to embrace URIs, although we should provide some guidance to the user. General agreement.

Vote: explicitly refer to XPointer instead of TEI extended pointers in P5 … no dissent, thus approved.

[Note: No item 1.1, as 1.1 and 1.2 are mutually exlusive, depending on which way we decided in 1]

how to deal with the fact that they're not the same.

REGEXPs: DD suggests straw man: explore how we could add regexp functionality to XPointer in the two places it matters (matching string values and selecting string ranges), keeping the TEI regexp syntax.

FV & CC contend that creating a regexp extension that is well thought out would be doing the world a favor.

Once we're done, we should consider suggesting W3C incorporate results into XPointer.

DD suggests we review TEI regexp syntax; SB agrees but thinks we need to review what else has been done in the world first (DD says W3C not working on it; Simon St. Laurent did something).

JH agrees to start working on a converter (TEI -> XPointer)

TEI linking elements & XLink

DD says he will investigate and report to list on how TEI linking & XLink match up, much as he did for pointers.

NI asks if we (TEI) now provide supported software, too?

DD answers that TEI as a whole is not becoming a software vendor, but this WG is trying to put together demonstration or helpful software. NI thinks good idea.

DD wants WG to produce list of open issues.

On rereading chapter 14, DD found a lot less than he remembered or expected on how to do real stand-off markup.

DD would like NI, ??? (linguists not on call) to figure out which way we'd like to do that (SOM).

NI: CES is more explicit; ISO preparing material on linguistic annotation. Will provide quick URLs to list on CES and whenever ISO stuff is available, that too.

CC needs some landmarks re: what level of detail needed; DD will give his feedback and encourages others to do so.

DD wants list of open issues in P4; may be able to catagorize the kinds of issues to help guide the decision TEI needs to make on what underlying schema to use, too.

DD wraps up by extolling us all to post to & reply to the list.
