The Executive Committee of the Text Encoding Initiative is pleased to announce the formation of a TEI Technical Review Committee (TRC), which will be responsible for the technical maintenance and extension of the TEI Guidelines. Initial membership is given below.

The Technical Review Committee (TRC) will consider proposals for revision or extension of the TEI Guidelines, decide on new work items, recommend the formation of new TEI work groups as needed, coordinate the activities of TEI work groups, and approve drafts for revision or extension of the Guidelines.

The TRC will hold its first meeting in Bergen, Norway, in June 1996, in conjunction with the ALLC/ACH 96 conference. Among its tasks will be to consider the formation of new work groups to revise or extend the Guidelines; users of the TEI Guidelines and other members of the public are therefore invited to propose topics for further work, to be discussed by the committee in Bergen.

Descriptions of proposed new work items should be sent to the editors of the Text Encoding Initiative and clearly labeled as proposals for new work items. Proposals will be made publicly visible on the TEI's WWW server at http://www-tei.uic.edu/orgs/tei/trc/nwi and anyone wishing to comment in favor of, or against, particular proposals is invited to do so using the listserv lists TEI-L@uic.edu or tei-tech@uic.edu. Further information on proposing new work items will be posted separately.

Proposals received before 15 June 1996 will be on the agenda in Bergen; proposals received thereafter will be placed on the agenda at future meetings.

The TEI Steering Committee has asked Terry Langendoen to serve as the initial chair of the Technical Review Committee; the initial membership of the TEI technical review committee is as follows:

As may be seen, editors and members of the TEI executive committee serve on the Technical Review Committee ex officio. Chairs of active work groups will also sit on the Technical Review Committee. The remaining members are named by the executive committee for staggered three-year terms.

The document formally describing the constitution and function of the Technical Review Committee (document TEI ED W48) is on the TEI Web server at http://www.tei-c.org/Vault/ED/edw48.tei and http://www.tei-c.org/Vault/ED/edw48.htm. Anyone interested is invited to read it and comment.
