                               OBJECTIVES
 
 
1.    Prepare and test Writing System Declarations for the languages of
      the EC in their modern forms, modern Slavic, Hebrew, and Arabic,
      using a representative selection of the character sets named in
      section 3.2.13 of TEI P1.
2.    In consultation with appropriate learned bodies and experts in the
      relevant fields draw up inventory and proposed char sets or sub-
      sets for historical linguistic and philological work in the lan-
      guages of the EC, older Slavic, Hebrew, and Arabic.
3.    Evaluate and report on widely-used transliteration schemes for the
      representation of other non-Latin alphabetic scripts. If, on con-
      sultation with relevant technical and professional bodies, a con-
      sensus can be formed, report on that consensus.
4.    Experiment with, and draft recommendations concerning applicabili-
      ty to TEI documents of specific technical proposals relating to
      mixed-script texts, including:
 
      *   ways of documenting data-direction switching
 
      *   ISO 2022, 4873, and 6429-based code switching
 
      *   TEI compatibility with both ISO 10646 and UNICODE proposals
5.    Formulate recommendations for the encoding of the IPA in co-
      operation with existing standardization efforts and with the
      responsible work group(s) for spoken texts to ensure utility of
      IPA encoding and draft recommendations for representation of
      suprasegmental phonetic data.
6.    Revise TEI P1 as needed to ensure that the TEI guidelines are usa-
      ble with both ISO 10646 and Unicode.
7.    Evaluate the utility of the ISO 646 subset for interchange and the
      wisdom of retaining it as part of the Guidelines, eliminating it,
      or making it part of a separate set of recommendations.
8.    Reply to comments on chapter 3 of TEI P1 routed to this work group
      by the editors.
9.    Suggest revisions and additions to chapter 3 of TEI P1.  If neces-
      sary, prepare a seperate guideline for multilingual generic encod-
      ing and writing tables to and from system specific coding.

                             ADMINISTRATIVE
 
 
   Work group reports to Committee for Text Representation.  Head of the
work group is Harry Gaylord.  Two further members of the work group are
to be named by the work group head with the concurrence of Stig Johans-
son; at least one should be a North American.
 
   Funding is authorized for three meetings.

                               DEADLINES
 
 
   WSDs for EC languages and scripts (TR1 W2), preliminary results for
other alphabetic languages (TR1 W2), IPA (TR1 W3), and global character
sets (TR1 W4) due 31 March 1991.  Drafts of all recommendations and
reports to be ready for circulation to the public for comment (same num-
bers, TR1 Pn) by 30 September 1991.  Final work to be completed by 1
March 1992.
