Travel and Other Information Travel and Other Information Text Encoding Initiative Text Encoding Initiative Advisory Board meeting Advisory Board meeting Oak Park, IL 28-29 June 1993 Oak Park, IL 28-29 June 1993 1. Getting to Chicago Chicago has two airports: O'Hare and Midway. Midway is smaller; O'Hare is more accessible by public transportation. Any delays owing to weather or overcrowding will be much the same at both airports, since both are served by the same air traffic controllers. Unless you are paying for your own travel costs, North Americans should fly U.S.-flag carriers wherever possible. Generally, the rule is that if a U.S.-flag carrier flies the route, or part of the route, you are taking, you must use a U.S.-flag carrier if you are to be reimbursed by the TEI. If you ____ are unable to observe this rule, please contact me to discuss your situation. 2. Getting to the Carleton Hotel in Oak Park by Taxi The meeting and accommodations will be at the Carleton Hotel, 1110 Pleasant St., Oak Park, IL 60302 (708) 848-5000. Oak Park is a suburb just west of Chicago, about a 45-minute ride from O'Hare Airport and a 30-minute ride from Midway Airport. The taxi fare will be about $25 from O'Hare and $20 from Mid- way -- please ask for a receipt, in order to be reimbursed! From O'Hare Airport From O'Hare Airport Tell the driver you are going to Oak Park, to the Carleton Hotel. Chances are the driver will need directions; here is what to say: 1. Take River Road south. (River Road is the first exit past the inter- change with Interstate 294, about 2 miles after leaving the airport.) 2. Follow River Road until you reach First Avenue. (This is about 7.5 miles.) 3. Take First Avenue south to Lake Street. (1.2 miles) 4. Turn east (left) on Lake Street, and continue to Harlem (about 1.7 miles) 5. Turn south (right) on Harlem, go under the Lake Street el (two blocks), and take the second left (the first legal left), onto Pleasant; this is one block south of the el, opposite the Dunkin Donuts on the right. Travel Information page 2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Head east on Pleasant two blocks; the hotel is on the left. Important Points to Remember: 1. Some cabbies will suggest taking the freeway to Oak Park. This is not unheard of, but it is farther and slower, especially at rush hour, and you will do well to say firmly "No, I'm told River Road is a better route." 2. Occasionally a cabby will confuse Oak Park with Oak Brook; this is most- ly important because Oak Brook is outside Cook County, and the fare is one and a half times the fare shown on the meter. Oak Park is within Cook County, and the fare due is the fare shown on the meter. From Midway Airport From Midway Airport Tell the driver you are going to Oak Park, to the Carleton Hotel. Chances are the driver will need directions. Here is what to say: 1. Take Harlem north, past the Eisenhower Expressway, almost all the way to the Lake Street el. 2. Four lights north of the Eisenhower Expressway is Randolph St. 3. One block north of Randolph, and one block short of the Lake Street el, turn right onto Pleasant. (If you miss Pleasant, turn right at the embankment for the Lake Street el, onto South Boulevard, and go around the block.) 4. Head east on Pleasant two blocks; the hotel is on the left. 3. Meals Breakfast Breakfast Coffee, tea, juice and rolls will be available on Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m.-9 a.m. in the meeting room. For those arriving on Saturday, or desiring a fuller breakfast on meeting days, the Carleton has a restaurant called Poor Phil's which opens at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday. Other establishments in the area of the hotel also serve breakfast. Snacks Snacks Coffee, tea, juice and rolls will be available periodically throughout Mon- day and Tuesday. Travel Information page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lunch Lunch Lunch will be catered by Philander's at the Carleton Hotel on Monday and Tuesday. It will be a "deli buffet" including meats, cheeses, breads, salads, soups, beverages and dessert. If you have dietary restrictions, let us know as soon as possible. Poor Phil's is open for lunch on the weekend, for those who arrive on Sat- urday and early Sunday. Dinner Dinner Dinner has been arranged for Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. at a Greek restau- rant, the Courtyards of Plaka, near the University of Illinois at Chicago. A brochure describing Oak Park and its restaurants will be included in the materials you receive upon arrival. I would be happy to recommend restaurants in downtown Chicago as well. 4. Schedule and Agenda Sunday, June 27 Sunday, June 27 An informal "Question and Answer" session will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday. Attendance is not mandatory, but those who have basic questions about TEI and/or SGML may find it useful to attend. A reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. with an open bar and cheese and crackers. All are encouraged to attend! Monday, June 28 and Tuesday, June 29 Monday, June 28 and Tuesday, June 29 We will meet from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tues- day. 5. Weather Chicago in June is likely to have Fahrenheit temperatures of 75 degrees or more, with evenings dipping to the 60's. [It is unlikely, but possible, that it could get as low as the 50's.] Rain is an ever-present possibility, so an umbrella and/or raincoat and hat are worthwhile for walking to restaurants, etc. Travel Information page 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Receipts, Reimbursements, Costs Those who will be reimbursed by the Text Encoding Initiative should keep all ___ receipts -- including taxis, public transportation, and restaurant meals (oth- er than the Courtyards of Plaka) -- and present them after the meeting. A reimbursement request form will be included in the materials received at the meeting. 7.
